Hello friends, I’m Murli from engishspoken.com, we are going to learn the Definition and kinds of Genders in English grammar.

Definition:- Gender is defined as the socially constructed roles and behaviors that society typically associates with males and females.

There are four kinds of Gender in English.Genders in English grammar
1. Masculine Gender  (पुलिंग)
2. Feminine Gender (स्त्रीलिंग)
3. Common Gender  (उभय लिंग)
4. Neuter Gender  ( नपुंसक लिंग)

  1. Masculine Gender:-The masculine gender denotes a male. As:- Ram, dog, man, father, bull, prince, actor, tiger, horse, hero, boy, etc.
  2. Feminine Gender:- The feminine gender denotes a female. As:- Sita, woman, mother, cow, sister, etc
  3. Common Gender:- The common gender denotes that the noun is either a male or a female. As:- bookseller = cousin, child, doctor chief, parent, person, student, relative, baby, enemy, clerk, writer, singer bird, deer, sheep, elephant, driver, professor, fool, foreigner, artist, guest, etc.
  4. Neuter Gender:- The neuter gender denotes that the noun is neither a male nor a female. As:- wood, oil, crow, ant, bench, school, book, pen, class, watch, honesty, army, etc.

Some Important Masculine and Feminine Gender

1. कुछ Noun को Masculine से Feminine बनाने के लिए पुरे words को बदल दिया जाता है|

2. कुछ Compound Noun में Masculine Prefix को Feminine में बदला जाता है|

Manservant Woman servant
Son-in-law Daughter-in-law
He-monkey She-monkey
Jack-ass Jenny-ass
Bull-elephant Cow-elephant

3. कुछ Compound Noun में Masculine suffix को बदलकर उसे Feminine बनाते है|

Grandfather Grandmother
Landlord Landlady
Fisher-man Fisher-woman
Stepbrother Stepsister

4. कुछ Masculine Noun के अंत में ess जोड़कर उसे Feminine बनाते है. कुछ word में  आवश्यकता पड़ने पर word के अंतिम वाले vowel को हटा दिया जाता है|

Some Important Rules of Gender:-Genders in English grammar

Rule (1):-कुछ ऐसे noun होते है जिनका प्रयोग सुंदरता (beauty), कमनीयता (gracefulness), सज्जनता (gentleness), कोमलता ,सौभ्यता ,लघुता आदि का बोध कराने के लिए किया जाता है। तो इस स्तिथि में इन्हे Feminine Gender माना जाता है।

Example:-

The moon, The Earth, Nature, flattery, spring, hope, virtue, charity, humility, mercy, faith, peace, ship, river, nation, jealousy, liberty, fame, city, country, train, pride, truth, justice. etc

  1. The moon shed her light on the bank.
  2. Spring has her own charms and delights.
  3. Peace hath her victories no less renowned than war.
  4. The ship fought its way through the stormy waves.
  5. Love virtue, she is alone free.

Genders in English grammar

Rule (2):- यदि common gender के nouns के पहले girl  /woman /lady /female का प्रयोग हो तो इनके लिए feminine gender के singular pronoun -she, her,(adj )  hers, herself का प्रयोग होता हे.

Example:-

Girl-friend, Girl-student, Female-child, woman-teacher, woman-doctor, woman-conductor, etc.

  1.  A girl student should not neglect her home.
  2. A woman doctor examines the patient herself.

Rule (3):- सामन्यतः bachelor तथा virgin का प्रयोग क्रमश अंग्रेजी भाषा में bachelor और virgin का प्रयोग masculine और feminine दोनों gender में हो रहा हे !

Example:-

  1. He is a bachelor.
  2. She is a bachelor girl.
  3. He is a virgin.
  4. She is a virgin.

Rule (4):- कुछ ऐसे nouns हे जिनका प्रयोग शक्ति (strength ),दृढ़ता (firmness )या ऊर्जा (energy )का बोध कराने के लिए होता हे !इस स्थति में इसे masculine gender (पुर्लिंग)माना जाता हे| तथा इसके लिए singular pronouns – he ,him ,his ,himself का प्रयोग जरूरत के मुताबिक होता हे !

Example:-

The sun, time, death, winter, wind, summer, thunder, ocean, love, war, wine, etc.

  1. The sun shot his bright rays.
  2. Death always knows her victim.
  3. Death lays his icy hand on kings

  1. Pronouns of Masculine Gender
    he, him, his, himself
  2. Pronouns of Feminine Gender
    she, her, hers, herself
  3. Pronouns of Common Gender
    me, mine, myself, we, us, ours, ourselves, you, yours, yourself, yourselves, somebody, nobody, anybody, everybody, someone, no one, anyone, everyone, who, whom, etc.
  4. Pronouns of Neuter Gender
    it, itself, nothing, anything, everything, something, which, etc.
  5. Pronouns used for all gender
    they, them, theirs, themselves, this, that, each, either, neither, many, both, whose, what, all, some, none, etc.
